I had the same question a million years ago and remember this from school - there is a specific rule when using the verb "adorer" - you always use definite articles "le, la, l' or les" after adorer and aimer to communicate *what* you love or like.
You just have to remember that this won't sound correct when literally translating into English.
I found a source on the web to validate this - apparently, the same rule applies to deteste and preferer.
