You are correct! Either construction can be used. Subject - verb - object or verb - subject -object. S/V/O is usual but either will be understood as meaning the same thing. However, the verb-subject construction is required when a question word (qué, cuàl, cómo, etc.) opens the sentence. Por ejemplo: ¿Dónde compra mamá pan? Where does mother buy bread?
Re the use of ustedes....In this case, ustedes is included to clarify that you are using the polite (formal) tone. If you omit it, the sentence may sound too informal. So, your instincts are correct again!
