It is technically the same.
"Tenia que hacer algo, pero ya no" - I had to do (something), but not anymore
"Se suponía que iba a hacer algo... pero ya no" - I had to do something , but not anymore.
We use "tenía que" much more frequently, so I would advise you to use "tenía que" when you want to say "I was supposed to".
The more frequent use of "Se suponía", it's actually when you want to say that "Something was supposed to be done, but it didn't" both for other people or impersonal/descriptive situations. It's rarely used for oneself, because it usually has a negative connotation, as if you had committed yourself to do something but you didn't.
