The Fluenz French 2 Podcast 01 might offer you some insights on liaisons. Sonia and George (the native French speaker who presents the podcasts with Sonia) explicitly discuss liaisons starting around 2:48. George speaks with a Parisian accent and extensive use of liaisons, while Sonia intentionally speaks with what she calls a more 'neutral' accent. She points out that liaison usage varies by region, and as a result there’s really no single 'right' way to use liaisons (though your French teachers apparently see things a bit differently).
