I think you are right...its not very consistent and there are a lot of exceptions. This (to me) is the hardest aspect of this level so far. Not to jump the gun, but I was looking at conjugations for salire and scendere, and one takes avere and the other takes essere. I can't make any sense of it. I'm afraid it will mostly involve memorization.

Adam and Kristin, I am having a difficult time with this as well because there are exceptions. But like other exercises I've completed that gave me a hard time, I just repeat them and practice the principles until I am comfortable with them. It certainly slows down rifling through the lessons, but I've found the extra attention pays huge dividends. Mi sento per te!

I think the best way is just memorization, unfortunately.

agreed. And as usual, the more I practice, the more second nature it becomes. Go figure! Why didn't anyone say the key was "practice, practice, practice?"

Italian is a very idiomatic language and you just have to memorize, memorize, memorize.
