I'd like to add that I do find the Flashcards somewhat helpful. I wish they had a couple more features. I'd like to turn off the most basic cards, maybe separate the cards into vocab cards and sentence cards so I could just elect to do the sentence cards. Second, I'd like a voice to read the English out loud so I don't have to look at my iPad screen while I'm driving. Right now I look at the screen, look back at the road, recite the German translation out loud, then swipe the iPad screen without looking at it to hear the answer. It would be a total eyes-on-the-road deal if the the English were read out loud.

Warum nicht is great. For German TV programmes I utilise ZDF, which often has programmes with subtitles. For vocabulary, I use one of two apps, Sticky Study or Anki Mobile from the Apple App Store (Anki Mobile is more powerful but steeper learning curve and way more expensive). These programmes are not German specific programmes, but they are a great tool to make your own flashcards. Alternatively, you can download sets of flashcards free from Flashcard Exchange through Sticky Study or directly from the Anki web site.
For books, I really like the Practice Makes Perfect series. And my go to book for detailed grammar questions is Hammer's German Grammar and Usage (probably not a great book for absolute beginners though).

EM - what do you suggest on ZDF - do you have any links?

What I normally do is just type 'untertitel' (without quotes) in the search box at the top of the page and it will bring up any programme that has German subtitles. I'll just select 1 and watch. Then, in the right hand corner of the video click UT which will turn subtitles on.
