The whole topic has been vexing for me as well. But bottom line, if the pronoun comes at the beginning, you use "essere". If the reflexive verb IS conjugated (and you are right, it wasn't in this case), then you must use essere, in part because you would have to put the pronoun at the beginning. Maybe someone else will have a more eloquent explanation.
