i think "er" is used for referring to people ("he"), whereas "der" can be used to refer to a masculine word ("der Flughafen") or to someone ("der Vater").

In spoken German, you'll hear the definite article most times, so you can say "Der ist weit entfernt". In spoken German, the articles (der/die/das) are more common than the personal pronouns (er/sie/es), but in written German you'd use the personal pronouns.
In this program we focus on the way people actually speak and not so much on written German, that is why we only introduce the idea of personal pronouns to replace things in the very last level of the program.
