Answer Question
Der versus Er
in the lessons there is a sentence " Nein, der ist weit entfernt." (der referring to der Flughafen). I have seen German language textbooks in which the same sentence would be translated "Nein, er ist weit entfernt." Why is the definite article used in one and the masculine singular pronoun in the other? Is this a regional thing, the result of the language evolving, or are both translations acceptable?
