It's because in the examples you provided, the 'le' is contracted which is always going to be the case for 'la' or 'le' when the following word begins with a vowel or an 'h' because the 'h' is silent. It's one of those things used that give French that flow, except of course when I am speaking it and still manage to get tongue tied on some phrases :)

Right. It's the same reason why you used (de l'entrée) instead of (de la entrée). But you would use (de la maison), (des maisons), (du bâtiment), and (des bâtiments), depending on the context of course.
