Always keep in mind that there is not always a direct translation between French and English. Things are often said in French that are different or in a different context than the way that we say in English. In English we would almost always say borrow in that situation, in fact if we were to say take, our culture might consider that as rude. However in French it is perfectly acceptable to say it this way. While I do know the verb emprunter, I have never been taught the proper way to use it. However I would assume to use emprunter would be for a situation where I'm asking or going to keep the pen for a longer length of time rather than use while I'm still in the same general area with you.
