Why ask why? Language is not designed. It's evolved. It's just the way they do it in Spain, I guess.

They do :) Adjectives don't always come after the noun, you will see things like "un amigo viejo" (a friend that is old), but also "un viejo amigo" an old friend. See http://spanish.about.com/od/adjective... for more information.

As I understand it, typically only the ordinals 1-10 are used, and are placed before a noun: e.g., "el primer día." From 11 on, the cardinal numbers are typically used, and are placed after a noun: e.g., "el día catorce."
