I'm studying French so I can't help with your particular book, but I'm curious: have you checked out http://italian.yabla.com ? It sounds like you're at the same place in your journey that I am, ready to take your listening skills to the next level. I just found Yabla a few days ago and it's exactly what I needed, and it seems to offer what you're looking for -- a way to rewind/loop/focus on interactive subtitles as you train your ear.
It's not free (about $10/mo, less if you go long-term), but IMO it's worth it. Here's a sample video from the Italian program:

Thanks for your response. Yes I have subscribed to Yabla through iTunes. I've gone through a number of the videos, and they help. Some more than others. I listen to Italian radio almost daily. I do understand more words, but my brain just seems to be slower than the person talking! I know…practice, practice, practice! Perhaps I just need to spend six months in Italy….. :-)

Lol, you reached the same conclusion I did. I'll be spending six months in France next year, because I'm convinced there's no substitute for being forced to listen, process, and engage. I say go for it!

Kristin, I love your posts - you always seem to give me more resources for learning! I'd love to work through an audio book with others, but I don't think I'm at your level yet. I am only on lesson 5 in level 4, so this book is probably still beyond my ability. But in a few months I may be able to take you up on this if you're still interested.

Thanks! But no worries, this book is beyond my ability too! :-)
Whenever you feel ready to give it a try, let me know. I haven't gotten all that far, but I think a team approach would help.
