I think that "y" might be technically correct, but generally it is used to complete a verb of motion when we would not say anything in English. For example, if the second sentence were "We could go together" which is perfectly correct in English, you would have to have the "y" in French. To make this point, Fluenz would have asked you to translate "We could go (there) together" and you would know they wanted "y". So, for the sake of the exercises, I think Fluenz will always have the "there" in () when they expect the response to be "y" and if not, the response would be "la" or "la-bas", they generally accept either.
