I agree, reading does help. I've done a couple of the easy readers in italian, and now am working on a "real" book (one that is very similar to a Dan Brown novel)….it goes very slowly, but I can get the gist and build vocabulary.

I have some Spanish readers for the same reason. I started reading those while doing Fluenz Level 2, then once I was done with those, I moved on to classic childrens' literature like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", easier books, but still something that an adult could enjoy. By the time I finished Fluenz Level 3, I could read the news on BBC Mundo (for French, you'd probably want BBC Afrique or Le Monde), and that really helped me pick up new words and use the language in my daily life. I'd also say that it helped me gain some insight into Latin American culture, by seeing what they think is newsworthy. Sometimes I'd write a brief comment or summary of the article; I didn't post it anywhere, but it gave me a chance to practice writing and composing my thoughts.
