Hi Karen. Without checking the corresponding Fluenz translations to these sentences, I would guess the first was "..with a salad" and the second was "...some sandwiches and salad." French does not allow expressions such as "I want salad" but insists on "I want of the salad" or more understandably "I want some of the salad." So, in the first case, the meaning is of "a" salad, and in the second "some" salad."
