It is almost like a very short rolled r. You use the tongue the same way you would if you were rolling the r but you cut it of almost immediately after you start.
This prevents it from rolling but gives you the hardness necessary for it to sound right. The sound should be hard and quick. I hope this helps. if you have any further questions just ask.

These issues of pronunciation are covered very well in the Audio CDs very near the beginning as I recall on Disc one.

I'm unable to roll the double r. For the simple r i sound like i'm doing a "d". I've been trying to roll the r for a year now, to no avail, so i gave up. People understand me, even though they sometimes correct me but then realize i just can't do it.

Hi gydiwon. Are you talking about the youtube video with the upside down hand? That one drove me crazy! I couldn't do it. I know it sounds really strange, but I keep a bottle of water next to me while i'm studying. Before I say a particularly hard word, I drink a little water and roll it around my mouth a little. I think it gets rid of some of the friction and helps to pronounce the words a little easier. Also, I'm on disk five and still have trouble with tarde. I always have a small pause before that word to help me say it right, Other words I have found through constant repetition I can roll my "r"s relatively well. I don't sound Spanish by any means, but as Fabrice said, my Spanish speaking friends understand me.
