The es/son depends on what you're referring to. You could say "Cuanto son tres de esos y once de esos", and have you replied "son quince euros". Here they use "cuanto es", meaning that they ask how much IS the sum of all the items. This is the usual way to ask for a price, it's become an idiom, and you will not use "cuanto son x and y" in this context. I think I disagree with KikiDelivers on the use of "son" for the response, I believe it's related to the fact that the amount if more than one euro, so it would be correct to say "es un euro" when referring to the total amount, and "son un euro" when referring to the number of items, but I've always been wondering if this was actually correct, so i'd like to hear from Fluenz about that :)
