Answer Question
Son vs es when announcing prices
Hello,
So far I have got up to Spanish 1 - Session 18 and am wondering why, when the price of something has been announced in dialogue, it is using son instead of es?
For instance, in the current conversation a chappy has asked for 'tres de esos y once de esos', before asking 'cuanto es?'.
The till worker replies by saying 'son quince euros', which has been translated as '(it)'s fifteen euros'.
In my mind the phrase used should be 'es quince euros', based on the given translation?
Am I using 'son' because the chap is trying to buy multiple items (making it 'ellos son' in a wider sense), and if he were only buying one item it would be 'es' instead?
Any help much appreciated! :)
Many thanks
