Hi Herryjm, the auxiliary for "Preferire" is "Avere", so "Ho preferito andare in autobus" is correct. You're probably referring to the use of modal verbs followed by another verb, which is explained in session 4, Level 4. "Dovere", "Potere" and "Volere" usually take "Avere" as an auxiliary, unless the verb following them requires the use of "Essere". So you would say "Ho dovuto comprare una macchina nuova" because "comprare" takes "avere" as an auxiliary. But you'd say "Sono dovuto andare al mercato" because "andare" takes "essere". So with these three verbs you have to pay attention to the verb following them in order to choose the correct auxiliary.
