Answer Question
Gibt es ein Krankenhaus und einen Park in dieser Stadt. (2/7) Why is it "ein Krankenhaus" but "einen Park"?
As a long time and long time ago English teacher, I know that "is" can't have a direct object. In other words, "There is what?" is not the same as "He wants what?" Yet I keep seeing the "-en" suffix.
More perplexing is that "Krankenhaus" and "Park" seem to be used in the same way yet one is "ein" and the other is "einen". The nouns are first neuter and the other is masculine, so "ein" is correct for "a".
Can someone please explain this. I have seen the same basic situation throughout the first two levels. It seems to be indicating that one isn't a direct object and one is. If I recall correctly the endings for direct objects are "-en" (n&m) and "-er" (f). Technically, neither is a direct object. But if one is, they both should be. There must be another explanation.
Thanks,
Dan
