Answer Question
French level 3 lesson 27 - use of 'y'
On the 'Repeat the Phrases' section, there is a sentence that confuses me because of the use of 'y' to mean 'it'. The sentence is:
"Mon fils adore jouer au tennis, et il y joue très bien"
I don't understand the use of 'y' here. If I'm understanding correctly, 'y' is used to replace a destination or place. It replaces words introduced by: "À/Au/À la/Aux" Wouldn't you use "le" here? i.e. "...et il le joue très bien"
Or is it because we say: "jouer au" (i.e. à le) that the "y" comes into play?
Please clarify :)
Thanks,
Brian
