Answer Question
French 3 Session 10: Pratiquer
I was speaking to my French friend yesterday and i was using the word pratiquer, As in: "je veux pratiquer mon français." And she found that sentence really specific/odd.
So i sent her the sentence from the session 10: "Mais je veux rester plus de temps pour pratiquer mon français"
She replied:
so pratique can be used in two ways either as is
« it’s practical to help each other out »
= « c’est pratique de s’entraider »
Or The practice of medicine or some type of acquired skill
So « il a une bonne pratique au violon » « he has good violin skills »
But you would use « entrainer » or « améliorer » for the sentence you sent me (Mais je veux rester plus de temps pour pratiquer mon français)
Then i asked her:
So basically u don’t use pratiquer as verb as they did in the program?
She replied:
Actually you can but it would be in the sens of: “to do “...a specific job or type of art or something that requires a kind of training so :
“Ca fait vingt ans qu’il pratique le violon/la médecine/la natation....”
“It’s been practicing the violin/medicine/swimming.... for 20 years”.
The nuance is really subtle so tell me if i’m being clear enough.
So Fluenz, it would be nice if you could help me out here and shine some light on the subject :) As i found that sentence really useful when speaking to people who know French
