Answer Question
What's your favorite city in Italy?
A few years ago I did a bike tour that started in Venice, went southwest to Ravenna, through Florence, and finally ended in Pisa. All I can tell you is that it was the vacation of a lifetime, seeing these fabulous cities and going through maybe a hundred tiny villages. Experiencing these places by bicycle was just the perfect way to do it because we got to ride leisurely, stop wherever we wanted, eat heartily, and interact with dozens of locals every day who were always fascinated and amazed by our journey from the east coast of Italy to the west coast.
The tour company (ExperiencePlus) does a fantastic job providing superb guides, excellent bikes -- and maybe the most important thing of all: they actually draw chalk arrows on the ground to show you where to turn. So you never have to look at maps or cue sheets in order to know where you're going, and you never get lost. But I digress.
Of all the places we saw, my favorite was the starting point in Venice. What a gorgeous, ancient, friendly, and fascinating city -- with its winding streets and absence of cars. There are wonderful museums, charming cafes, and piccoli negozii everywhere. Want to see where all that incredible Venetian glass is made? Just hop on a vaporetto (water taxi) and get off on the little island of Murano. Stroll the main street and you'll see at least a hundred glass shops and several factories.
But as long as there's a caprese salad and pizza on the menu, any Italian city is worth visiting.
So, what about you? What's your favorite city in Italy, and why? If you've never been there, what city would you most like to visit?
