Answer Question
placement of "tous" in a compound verb
One of the exercises in this lessons requires a translation of "we all ate" and the given answer is "nous avons tous mangé". Since "tous" seems to be used as an adjective here, I'm just trying to understand the placement, namely why is it going between the auxiliary verb and the past participle. Is this required? Would "nous avons mangé tous" or "nous tous avons mangé" be acceptable forms either? Is there a rule for this issue, or is this just a specific rule for this (rather common) word, "tous".
