Answer Question
Pronouncing v in Spanish
I'm confused about pronouncing v. Everywhere I look says that v is exactly like b, and, indeed, sometimes it sounds that way. But other times it sounds just like an English v. A place where this is particularly true is voy/vamos/va. No matter how many times I listen, it sounds like an English v, not like b in boy. Similarly, the v in por favor. Further, I watch how Sonia moves her lips. Pronouncing b as in boy requires touching your lips together, whereas for an English v you touch your upper teeth to your lower lip but the lips don't touch. I'm sure I can see Sonia's teeth throughout the beginning of her saying voy/vamos/va, which is consistent with pronouncing the v as in English rather than like a b.
