Answer Question

Hello,
I've been using Fluenz Mandarin for about two weeks. I have progressed through lesson 13 on 1+2.
I was looking for clarification of the particle "de".
The online flashcards are most recent in my mind, so on the chance there is a discrepancy between those and the DVDs, that is where my example comes from.
1) This small book = Zhè ge xiăo de shū.
2) This small book is too expensive = Zhè ge xiăo shū taì guì le.
In example 1, "de" is used. In example 2 "de" is not used. I have noticed that it can be entered either way and the software allows it.
Is there a particular rule for how "de" is used? Is one way more correct than the other?
I am thinking that whatever is happening here has to do with xiăo being an adjective of shū. When dealing with a pronoun, for example "Nĭ de pèngyou", I am guessing the exclusion of "de"(Nĭ pèngyou) is not correct.
Am I on the right track? Any thoughts?
Thanks.
