Answer Question
Let's Learn "The Present Conditional Tense" !
Salve!
Even though my Fluenz journey ended almost a month ago when I finished Italian 5, the learning doesn't stop...and possibly will not ever!
Now studying on my own and with Advanced Italian by Living Language, I shocked myself when I realized how many verb tenses I am using in writing and speaking Italian: the present tense, the passato prossimo, the imperfect, the trapassato prossimo, the future, the imperative, the gerund, reflexives, and now the present conditional.
Known as Condizionale Presente (The Present Conditional), this is one hopeful and useful verb tense for intermediate and advanced learners of Italian! Infact, knowing this tense, takes you another step closer to expanding the ways of expressing yourself like a native in Italian..
Now before I show you how to go about learning this verb tense, guess what.. you already know a conjugation in this tense without maybe realizing it? Any idea what it is... VORREI. Io Vorrei (I would like) is an irregular conjugation of Volere (To Want) in the present conditional. Also, depending on your level, you know another..POTREI (I could).
Here we go....
WHAT IS THE PRESENT CONDITIONAL ?
-This tense expresses possible or hypothetical actions or states. In English, it would translate as "WOULD + Verb". This tense can also be used to express polite requests and wishes, especially when using with potere or volere or dovere. There are 2 conditional tenses, the present and past... let's learn the present first!
HOW TO FORM THE PRESENT CONDITIONAL ?
-The present conditional is formed in a similar way to the Future Tense (see my post on that tense to learn it!) in that it drops the final 'e' from the infinitive. Like the future tense, the present conditional also changes the 'a' in the ending of 'are' verbs to 'e'.
WHAT ARE THE PRESENT CONDITIONAL ENDINGS ?
-Io.... - ei
-Tu.... -esti
-Lui/Lei..... -ebbe
-Noi.....-emmo
-Voi.....-este
-Loro.....-ebbero
APPLY THE CONJUGATIONS:
Parlare:
Io parlerei
Tu parleresti
Lui parlerebbe
Lei parlerebbe
Noi parleremmo
Voi parlereste
Loro parlerebbero
Finire:
Io finirei
Tu finiresti
Lui finirebbe
Lei finirebbe
Noi finiremmo
Voi finireste
Loro finirebbero
EXAMPLE SENTENCES:
Pulirei la mia camera (I would clean my room)
Usciremmo con voi (We would go out with you)
Dormiresti tutto il giorno (You would sleep all day)
Avrebbero il tempo (They would have the time)
IRREGULARS IN PRESENT CONDITIONAL:
Verbs that irregular in the Future tense, tend to be irregular in the present conditional and have the same stems.
These include andare (andr), avere (avr), bere (berr), dovere (dovr), essere (sar), fare (far), volere(vorr), dare(dar).
Remember, you already know two irregulars..Vorrei and Potrei!
Potrei prenotare una camera doppia? (Could I reserve a double room?)
Vorrei sapere (I would like to know)
Avrebbero il tempo (They would have the time)
