Answer Question
Could in the Conditional vs. Passé Compose
In French 4, Exercise 13, "Write the word you read", there is a phrase "..., but they could not finish". This phrase is symptomatic of a number of places in the exercises where Fluenz uses the Passé Compose rather than the Conditional to conjugate the verb. I would really appreciate an explanation. I think the problem for me may be that I am confusing the English use of the word "could" with it being representative of the Conditional (they could ==>they would be able to (Conditional) vs. they have been able to (P.C.))???
Fluenz answer is: Ils n'ont pas pu finir
Mine is: ils ne pourraient pas finir.
