Answer Question
The quest for accurate French subtitles...
I'm halfway through Fluenz French 5 so it's time to ramp up my listening comprehension. I was psyched to discover my Blu-Rays of LOST (a show I pretty much know by heart) had French subtitles, so my plan was to re-watch the series in French. I soon learned that it does what many other shows and movies do: the subtitles stay true to the screenplay but the spoken dialogue is quite different, changed to sync up with the actors' mouths.
So I rummaged through my DVD collection, and the few French-language movies I own don't have French subtitles. Incroyable!
I found pluzz.francetv.fr, which streams some programs with French subtitles. A good start, but some of it goes so fast my head spins. I finally discovered that -- promise not to laugh -- it's really helpful to listen to French children's music (i.e. Alain Le Lait) and watch cartoons dubbed in French (Peppa Pig is awesome in French, I don't care what anyone says). Thanks to Fluenz I can understand a lot of it even without subtitles; the dialogue is simple and they make an effort to speak clearly.
As fun as it is to feel like a kid again, I want grown-up movies that are spoken in French and have subtitles that match what I'm hearing. So, I welcome any tips... I'm guessing my best bet is to buy a Region 2 (or region-free) DVD/Blu-Ray player and import Region 2 DVDs with closed captioning? Am I missing any other obvious options?
