Answer Question
When to use
I have studied Spanish on and off most of my life. I'm currently in college learning the "standard" Spanish (what the LA program that I own teaches as well). I am confused as to why it teaches esta (e.g., Ella esta muy bien instead of Ella es muy bien). I feel like I have always used "es" except in certain circumstances and have never been corrected, so I am just wondering about an explanation to lessen my confusion with it (and if I should have been corrected). Does it have to do with a person's state of being? So if you are saying "She is well" over "She is Isabella". So would it be "Ella esta bien" and "Ella es Isabella"? The same type of question with estoy vs soy. I hope this makes sense. I'm not very good with explaining things.
Also, I have never heard the verb "tomar" to mean "to drink" until now. I have heard the verb before, but for "to drink" I have always heard and used "beber." Why does Fluenz teach tomar? I am not suggesting it's right/wrong, but I purchased this to supplement classroom learning (which has never gone well for me for a variety of reasons), so I am just wondering about the usage since in the classroom, I am taught something different.
Thank you so much for responses.
