Answer Question
Think of Passe Compose as
I am at french level 2 atm, so maybe I didn't get the whole picture. But to me this seems very linked. Even though you translate it with "I was", "I ate", etc... If I want to come up with a sentence, it seems much better to think of "I was eating", "I have been"... Why?
"I ate" ~~ "I was eating" => "Je suis mangé"
"I went" ~~ "I was going" => "Je suis allé"
"I was" ~~ "I have been" => "J'ai été" ( I think this is not the same English tense though.Meh :( But maybe someone with better grammar understanding could come up with a good rule here? )
I am not sure how this "have" => "avoir" and "was" => "etre" will play out for more words, but for the ones I have seen so far it always fits and you don't need to remember anything new, just think in a different tense.
