Answer Question
Trying to Understand A little Ambiguity
In Level 2 Lesson 15 the phrase "Ich möchte eine Freundin aus den USA anrufen" is translated as "I wish to call a friend(f) from the USA". What I would like to understand is the form: In English, if we're in Germany and say we want to call a friend back in the USA, we'd likely say "I want to call a friend in the USA", not "from". Of course, if said friend is also in Germany while we are, then it's understood to be "(who is) from the USA". But, in English, the translation given could also mean (a bit of a stretch, I grant) that we wanted to make the call while we are IN the USA. So, does the German mean 1) call someone back in the USA? 2) call someone else in Germany who is from the USA or 3) make the call from the USA? I'd like to understand if in German, the sentence is unambiguous or if the same ambiguity exists as does in the English translation. Thanks!
