Answer Question
Maybe Use Less Ambiguous English? Yet Another Question About Word Order!
In the exercises, the English sentence "I made a cake for his birthday yesterday" is said to be translated by the German "Ich habe gestern einen Kuchen für seinen Geburtstag gemacht". From the German, I would assume that it was the making of the cake that happened yesterday, the day of the birthday's being unknown, since "gestern" appears where it does. But I would read the English, given that "yesterday" is adjacent "birthday", that it was his birthday that was yesterday and the date of the cake's baking unknown. Any comment on placement of such modifiers (I got it wrong when I translated it since I placed "gestern" just before "gemacht" since that's how I read the English)?
