Answer Question
"Jouer au Sport" vs "Faire du sport"
Level 3 session 19, "Write the phrase you read" one of the exercises reads:
"No thanks, I’ve already played sports the day before yesterday" The answer given is: "Non merci, J'ai déjà fait du sport avant-hier"
I found the use of the "fait du" confusing as all examples of "Faire du" from the tutorial applied to things that one "does", not those that one "plays", like bicycling, skiing & swimming. Accordingly, these are translated to "faire du velo" "faire du ski" etc. The things one "plays", like golf or football are given as "jouer au golf" or "jouer au football". So why is to"play sports" not some form of "jouer au sport"? Why is "playing" sports linguistically different than "playing" golf or football?
Thanks in advance!
