Answer Question
Finishing the program
I recently finished Level 5 of Fluenz Italian and would like to share a few thoughts. First I would like to say that I think Fluenz is the best self-learning language program out there, bar none. I know there has been some debate over the best way to learn a language, i.e., by immersion, grammar and vocabulary lessons, etc. Personally, I think that what makes Fluenz such a great program is how every new concept is explained. This is especially true with verb conjugation (think present tense, imperfect tense, etc.) and other tricky things like when to use direct and indirect objects. Anyone can learn vocabulary whether it is by studying a dictionary, using other computer-based language programs, or trying to absorb it through immersion. By learning and understanding concepts, however, one can apply them to situations that are not discussed in the program. For example, now that I know how to conjugate an -are verb, I can use that method for almost any other -are verb and not just the ones in the program.
I feel overwhelmed when I watch an Italian movie or TV program because I still have so much to learn. I just cannot process the translation as quickly as people speak but maybe that will come with practice. I plan to continue learning with a tutor since I have come so far already. My only complaint about Fluenz is that I would love to see more levels added! I will keep recommending Fluenz to anyone who is interested in learning a new language. To those who are currently using Fluenz, I hope I can offer some encouragement to keep at it. As Sophie likes to say, practice, practice, practice!
