Answer Question
Why does Fluenz pronounce the "s" at the end of first-person plural verbs?
I gave my Brazilian friend a tour of my Portuguese lessons on Fluenz and his first reaction was, "That's so São Paulo!". Generally he was impressed with how things were organized and explained as well as how it teaches the Portuguese that people actually speak on the streets of Brazil. When I spoke in Portuguese he was impressed with how understandable it was, as long as I opened my mouth more than I'm used to.
With one exception: he was confused why the program teaches us to pronounce the "s" at the end of first-person plural verbs, e.g. "vamos". He said nobody pronounces that "s", only maybe old ladies that want to sound extremely proper or maybe people from the north. Once he told me this, I was able to pick up on a lot more Portuguese because I wasn't expecting to hear that "s", and understand why I never heard anyone saying "vamos" even though in the program it's very common. At least in São Paulo they say "vamo", not "vamos".
Why did Fluenz choose to pronounce that "s"?
I am just starting my Level 5 CD so if this is explained in the program after that, take my comment in that context. Very grateful for the amazing program. Fluenz has made several languages much more accessible for me. Thank you very much.
