Avoir is the auxiliary verb for MOST passé composé verbs. But verbs involving movement use être as their auxiliary verb. Aller is an example of such a movement verb. So "sont", which is the 3rd person plural form of être is correct.

Thank you I figured that out in the interim. I get confused still when the english traslation has the word 'have' or hasn't in it. I do understand that être is the auxillary verb here.
