Never mind. I looked on other sources and found the answer. It's "el" only when the emphasis is on the first syllable of a noun beginning with the letter "a."

There are actually only very few nouns that are feminine and use the masculine articles UN and EL because they start with a stressed "A", "agua" being the most common one by far ;-)
