This is a good question. I am not sure if they mention this in level 2, but in level 4 they explain that there are certain verbs that need to be followed by the preposition "a" if they are followed by another verb. The verb "ir" is one of these verbs that require the preposition "a" if it is followed by another verb. For example you would say "Yo voy a viajar manana". Here the preposition "a" is required because the "ir" verb (voy) is followed by another verb (viajar). If "voy" was not followed by another verb you would not require the preposition "a". For example you would say "Yo voy manana". In this case the "ir" verb (voy) is not followed by another verb so it does not require the preposition "a".
