As you said in your comment: je suis literally means I am, yet in the expression: How are you? I'm fine, it's incorrect to use "être" in French, simply the two language don't match in this expression (as in many others) so here you have to take a little distance from English and think that the correct way of saying this in French is with the verb "Aller": Comment ça va? Je vais bien, merci...
