I think the difference in pronunciations you're detecting is due to the speakers being from a variety of regions, with their own unique accents. Some time ago, I lived in West Berlin, a region where words ending in "ig" were pronounced as "sh." Other regions pronounced it with a sound made in the back of the throat, as when a cat hisses. And still others actually hit it hard, with a definite "ig" sound, as in "rig."
This question seems to come up in discussions of every conceivable language, particularly Latin American Spanish.

Interesting! I just finished level 2. At lesson 28 or 29 they go over consonant pronunciations. She clearly says that 'ig' is pronounced with a 'ch' sound. Then what do they do--they immediately start pronouncing with the hard 'g' sound.

Just as others have said, it typically varies by region. I've lived in Germany for over a year now and I mostly hear the "g" pronounced as "ch." I think that's the most commonway to pronounce it. That's only from my experience. Everyone will still understand you if you pronounce it as a hard g.
