I remember these two sentences and thinking, "If the restaurant is closing today, why would one care if it is close?" I ended up just going with since "close" has two vastly different meanings in English, that it was just an exercise to wrap our English language brains around how to use those two definitions differently.
Now, that I'm thinking a bit more about it, we could say "The restaurant closes today," and mean that it is going out of business, but I'm certain different word are used for that in German.
