Hi Jane,
Here are a few tips about this:
Estar en el trabajao = To be at work (always with the article "el")
Ir al trabajo = To go to work
Estar en Madrid de trabajo = To be in Madrid for work (to say "for work" you can also use "por trabajo", both expressions, de trabajo and por trabajo are very common)
