I use tandem. I just got back into Fluenz after having a baby. I'm only 12 lessons in. I restarted as I was only about 15 lesson in when I stopped. I basically just read off my sentences I've written out through the lesson and have somebody comment on them.
I make a ton of notes in each lesson.
In turn I help others with English by answering their questions.
It works well as most of the people I have connected with are in France.

Hello! To improve your Spanish language skills. ( which just happens to be completely free!)
1. Learn the 1000 most frequently used words in Spanish. These can be found by doing a Google or Youtube search. The 1000 most frequent words cover about 80 percent of spoken language.
2.Next use your tutor or a translation app on your phone to create your own phrase book. This would be phases that YOU want or need to use daily. You will always learn much faster by learning vocabulary and phrases that you WILL use on a daily basis. (If you don't use it, you loose it)
3. Start reading and listening - Find reading material, videos on Youtube, Podcasts that are just above your current level. you should understand about 70 percent of what you are reading or hearing. Take your time! Listen to or read the same item several times times. Look up vocabulary that you don't know or since you have a tutor, have them explain it to you. Also, make sure you pick material you are interested in, this is a KEY factor. Your mind will switch off if you are not interested.
These are the methods that I have learned from others that truly work.
Hope this helps!
Mike

Thank you, Mike! Those are all good suggestions. I started making flash cards from some of the phrases from Fluenz along with watching telenovelas on Netflik with Spanish subtitles. It's slow going but I'm feeling a little more confident.
