Hi Jane,
In Spanish, you don't have to include the subject pronouns in order to be grammatically correct. So, it's proper to say the sentences either with or without the pronouns. However, depending on the context, sometimes it's much preferable to include the pronoun. If you are already speaking about a person, or group of people, then any immediate questions can be presumed to be about that very person or group. However, if you haven't been already talking about that person/group then it's much preferable to include the "ellos/ellas" in order to avoid any confusion as to whom you are referring.
