The short answer I believe is with any form of "ir" (to go) you need "a" before the second verb. I realize this distinction doesn't correspond to English exactly, but we all need to remember that each language has it's own specific structures that do not necessarily correspond word for word with how we would say it in English.

I get that it doesn't correspond exactly. For sure!
But I like to know the rules and exceptions.
For example, I recently learned that nouns ending in "ma" (e.g. problema) are of a greek origin and that is why they have a fem ending but a masc article. how about that?

There are a couple of reasons for the "a".
Number 1: the personal a, if you are talking about a person you have to add that "a"
Ex. Voy a llamar a Anna. Because you are not calling Anna something you are calling TO her
Number 2: The verb is an action:
Voy a comprar un auto. You are taking action. You going to do something, in this case buy a car
In the other cases:
Necesito comprar o quiero comprar
In these examples you are just stating that you need to or want to, but no action is occurring.
Hope that helps you!
