It's unclear to me if you made a typo when you said "li esercizi", since "li" means "there" and not "the."
"Esercizi" is the plural of "esercizio", so you'd want a plural article to modify it. So, the rule: "il" is used for masculine singular nouns beginning with a consonant. "l' " is used for masculine singular nouns starting with a vowel (such as "esercizio"). "i" is used for masculine plural nouns starting with a consonant. "gli" is used for masculine plural nouns starting with a vowel.
