Possessives can be tricky in Italian you're right, as explained in level 1 sessions 11 and 12, possessives in Italian are always preceded by the article, except for family members in singular, which is why we say:
Mio zio = My uncle BUT I miei zii = My uncles
Mia sorella = My sister BUT Le mie sorelle = My sisters
Uncles and Aunts are new here, but they're no exceptions ,they behave like other family members.
In all other contexts apart from possessives, the rules for articles are the same with family members as with other people or things.
