Generally you will want to attach a "de" to the adjective when it attaches an attribute to the noun. For that example, "big" is the adjective attribute, "book" is the noun, so to attach them together you would say "da de shu".
More examples:
a big house: "da de fanzi"
that small cat: "na ge xiao de mao"
beautiful skies: "mei de tian"
tasty food: "haochi de cai"
strong coffee: "nong de kafei"
In spoken chinese you may hear people omit the 'de' in some circumstances, but for now you should always add it in this situation.
The "de" is an extremely important grammatical feature and you need to understand it very well. It will be used in much complex sentences that you will see later in the course.
